Minoxidil Vesus Propecia

hair lossThere are two different hair loss strategies that men like to turn to before facing surgery or transplants: Minoxidil and Propecia. Both are known for their effectiveness, but they are both used differently and have very different side affects. So what's the difference between the two, and which one should you try? Here's our facts comparison to help you make the right choice for your hair loss problem.

To start, Minoxidil and Propecia are different types of drugs, but used for the same purpose of stemming hair loss. They are both also used differently. Minoxidil is applied topically to the scalp to help reinvigorate hair follicles that have shrunken due to hormonal changes. In contrast, Propecia is an oral medication that helps reduce DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a type of hormone that is linked to causing shrinking follicles and hair loss. Both are used for male patterned baldness, but only minoxidil is safe for women, as Propecia can cause health and birth defects in women.

They both have similar goals of stemming hair loss and regrowing hair. However, Propecia is a prescription drug that is a bit harder to get through a pharmacy, and can also be costly since it is usually not covered by insurance. Minoxidil however is easily found as an over-the-counter product, and is cheaper.

The most important distinction between the two are the side affects and expectations in results. Propecia is known to have a drastic effect on a man's libido, semen count, and ability to maintain an erection. While it happens to only 2% of users, Propecia can also cause redness, swelling, or rashes on the face. Minoxidil can some topical side effects like itchy or dry scalp, skin peeling, or redness that usually goes away when you stop using it. More serious side effects can include hives and swelling for anyone who is allergic to minoxidil, and irregular heartbeat or pain. When it comes to results, Propecia can take as little as 3 months of use to start showing effects, with some people waiting at least 12 months for change. Minoxidil is usually faster, with some people getting results in as little as a month, but typically within 3 to 4 months of use.

Overall, Minoxidil/Xandrox is a safer alternative when compared to Propecia. To start your minoxidil treatment, contact us.
