Options for Prescription Hair Loss Products

hair lossHair loss affects nearly 85% of men and 40% of women. Though the problem is so wide-spread, medical science has not made available prescription hair loss products in any significant quantity. There are only two medications approved by the FDA to treat male hair loss, and only one to treat female hair loss. Ironically, neither treatment was ever intended to treat hair loss in men or women. Rather, they were both accidental side effects of other medications. The first medication, Finasteride, is better known as Propecia. It was originally a drug to treat enlarged prostates, and works as a hormonal inhibitor. Since it is a male-oriented drug, it does not work for women the same way it does for men. This leaves Minoxidil, better known as Rogaine. Originally, minoxidil in pill form was a high blood pressure medication. Researchers noticed hair growth as a side effect, and formulated the topical treatment. Generally, minoxidil comes in concentrations of 2%. Since it does not have a hormonal application, this is the only medication currently approved by the FDA for female use.

A new wave of treatments has hit the market recently. This treatment combines the DHT blocking properties of Propecia with the hair growth properties of Rogaine. The treatment is flexible, and is available in a wide range of minoxidil concentrations, from 2 to 15 percent. It offers both DHT blocking and non-DHT blocking treatments, so that everyone, no   matter their gender, can receive a customized treatment that works.
